Important Zoom Security Update - September 27
Starting September 27, Zoom will require that all meetings are protected with a passcode or waiting room. Since April, most newly scheduled Harvard Zoom meetings have been passcode protected by default.
However, this change may impact:
- Meetings hosted using a personal meeting link or ID (PMI)
- Meetings scheduled before April 8, 2020 (including recurring meetings)
- Users who have disabled default passcode protection
To ensure that your upcoming meetings aren’t disrupted, follow the instructions below to review your settings.
What do I need to do?
Reviewing your settings is easiest with the web version of Zoom. Go to harvard.zoom.us and sign in, then follow the steps below:
1. Review your previously scheduled or recurring meetings
- Click ‘Meetings’
- Review your list of upcoming meetings. Any meetings that are not passcode-protected are indicated with a red exclamation mark icon
2. Add a passcode to any meetings that do not have one
- Click the meeting title, then click ‘Edit’
- Check the ‘Passcode’ box. A passcode will be auto generated
- Click ‘Save’. A new meeting link with passcode will be created
- Copy the link and send the updated details to participants (e.g. by updating the meeting invitation)
3. Change your settings to add passcode protection to all your meetings and your personal meeting ID (PMI)
- Click ‘Settings’
- Scroll to the ‘Security’ section

Toggle on the recommended settings:
- ‘Require a passcode when scheduling new meetings’
- ‘Require a passcode for instant meetings’
- ‘Require a passcode for Personal Meeting ID (PMI),’ then select ‘All meetings using PMI’
What will happen if I don’t do anything?
After September 27, Zoom will automatically add a waiting room to any meetings that are not passcode-protected. Waiting rooms require the host to admit individual participants before they can join a meeting. Learn more about managing waiting rooms.
